Your right-hand voice assistant can now help you find a job. All you have to do is ask!

Alexa, can you set my alarm?

Alexa, can you tell me what the weather is like today?

Alexa, can you help me get a job?

The popularity of voice assistants (software controlled by voice commands) is growing rapidly, with more and more people making smart speakers part of their routines. According to 2019 data from eMarketer, 112 million people in the United States alone will use a voice assistant at least once a month. Popular types of voice assistants include Amazon's Alexa smart speaker and Google Assistant. Most users tell their assistants to play music and answer basic questions — and now, you can use them in your job search.

McDonald's has launched a new, first-of-its-kind program called “Apply Thru,” which allows prospective employees in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and the UK to search for open roles at the golden arches using Alexa and Google Assistant. All a job seeker has to do is say “Alexa, help me get a job at McDonald's.” After a few get-to-know-you questions, the Apply Thru voice app will surface relevant opportunities at nearby restaurants and text you links to apply directly through your computer or phone.McDonald's hopes that by making their employment opportunities easier to find — all you have to do to get started is to say seven little words — they'll attract a wider, tech-savvy talent pool of younger workers who have grown up talking to these devices.

Technology is also increasingly becoming a part of the job-hunting process. An applicant tracking system, for example, will review your resume before you even meet a hiring manager. Meanwhile, software like HireVue watches your video interview and decides if you're worth moving on to the next stage, no human eyes required. With massive global employers like McDonald's embracing all types of technology, including voice assistants, it seems like only a matter of time before the full-hiring process — application, interview, and offer —  is taken over by code.
